About Sophie's Restaurant and Deli
Pat has always loved to cook and entertain people. At an early age she was already eager to help her mother, Sophie, create something good to eat. Pat never outgrew her love of cooking and entertaining, hostessing many meals for friends and family over the years. Her formal education in Human Ecology preceded her career as a Home Economics teacher. When she retired she continued with her interest in food. Pat formulated her own bread mixes, dog treat mixes, and perogies which she sold in local farmers' markets in Winnipeg. But it was not until she entered the Great Manitoba Food Fight in 2007, sponsored by Manitoba Agriculture Food and Rural Initiatives, that her talents were truly recognized. Her entry comprised of freshly baked breads, made on site from her own bread mixes. The judges must have loved them because they named Pat the grand prize winner! It seems only natural that she would branch out into an entrepreneurial venture in the form of Sophie's Restaurant and Deli.

A property was purchased and the building had to be completely renovated. Pat opted for an addition to house a brand-new commercial kitchen where not only the restaurant food, but also her deli items could be prepared. So many decisions, so many delays, so much red tape ! Finally the last contractor was done, permits obtained and inspections passed so the building was now complete. The recipes were all tested, though the china, serving dishes, cutlery, pots and pans still needed to be chosen and the kitchen outfited with machines and gadgets. Serving staff and cooks needed to be recruited, trained and scheduled. Pat dedicated her restaurant in honour of her mother who inspired Pat's passion for cooking and entertaining, thus the restaurant was named "Sophie's".
Combining the friendliness, comfort and atmosphere of a family
restaurant with good home-cooking, Sophie's will satisfy your hunger
with never quite the same, but always delightfully delicious
breakfasts, lunches, suppers, appetizers, desserts, home-made pizza,
Ukrainian and other ethnic cuisine and specials. Every day there is a
lunch and supper special; Wednesday through Sunday are
feature night specials made from scratch with fresh ingredients.
Sophie's soups, borscht, bread, desserts and everything coming out of
the kitchen tastes as wonderful as it smells.
Sophie's is now open for business, though Pat's vision is not yet complete. She will be expressing her love of gardening and flowers in the exterior landscaping, installing a water feature and maybe a play structure. She plans to design a flower garden featuring classics like hollyhock, foxglove, lily of the valley, and bleeding heart with paths and benches so customers can walk or just sit and soak up the experience.
